Black Diamond Builds a Brand Inside the Brand

BD HEX gives climbing its own subcultural platform—combining wide-cut workwear, graphics, films, athletes and sessions without translating everything into conventional performance language.

Black Diamond normally speaks through equipment.

BD HEX speaks through a scene.

For Spring 2026, the project combines climbing apparel, films, athletes, designers and physical sessions under one identity. The collection includes heavyweight organic-cotton trousers and shorts, graphic T-shirts, hoodies, a workwear-shaped jacket and reversible headwear.

The silhouettes are wide.

The graphics are direct.

Technical optimisation is not the main message.

That distinction matters. Instead of presenting climbing only through grades, equipment and professional competition, BD HEX builds around the culture surrounding a session: clothing, filming, route setting, friendships and the places where people meet.

Its athlete team includes Toinon Beigne, Noah Keithley, Zach Galla, Sean Faulkner and Finn Stack. Designers Bobby Vannoy, Mal Osaka and Cole Smith are credited beside them.

Design is not treated as packaging added after the climbing.

It belongs to the same team.

The content follows that logic. Films move between difficult outdoor problems, recovered footage, road trips and stripped-back community sessions. One event transformed a bare 35-foot wall at Seattle Bouldering Project into an open session. Another followed the team through Magic Wood.

The product becomes only one part of the system.

This separates BD HEX from a conventional diffusion line. The garments are not simply cheaper versions of Black Diamond equipment, nor are they technical pieces disguised as streetwear. Heavy cotton canvas, oversized pockets and relaxed cuts respond to climbing, but also acknowledge the hours before and after an attempt.

The risk is familiar.

A subculture created inside a global outdoor company can easily feel simulated. Loose trousers, analogue-looking graphics and underground films have become a recognisable commercial language.

BD HEX avoids part of that problem by giving athletes and designers visible authorship and by producing sessions rather than only campaign images.

Editorial Conclusion

ZONTRAC Verdict.

Final / FN-26-036

BD HEX works because it does not try to make every climbing object look faster, lighter or more advanced.

It treats performance as one element inside a wider culture.

Black Diamond supplies the scale.

The team supplies the identity.

The question is whether BD HEX can remain specific as it grows.

A scene cannot be manufactured through clothing alone.

It has to keep meeting at the wall.
