Wool Returned Without Looking Back

Klättermusen’s Balderus and Embla return wool to technical hiking layers. Reinforcements, ventilation and modern patterning reveal where the fibre still works—and where synthetics remain difficult to replace.

It simply moved closer to the skin.

While synthetic fleece became the default technical midlayer, wool remained in base layers, socks and clothing for slower outdoor movement. Its ability to regulate temperature, retain warmth when damp and resist odour kept it relevant.

For Fall/Winter 2026, Klättermusen moves the material outward again.

The Balderus Jacket and Embla Hood Jacket use wool as the foundation of modern hiking layers. Reinforcements, ventilation and articulated construction address the areas where the natural fibre alone becomes less convincing.

The Balderus is the heavier interpretation.

It weighs 575 grams and uses a dense knitted fleece made from recycled Italian wool. Nylon panels reinforce zones exposed to wind, abrasion and backpack contact. A raglan cut supports movement, while two zipped hand pockets and front ventilation add practical trail functionality.

The construction makes its material strategy visible.

Wool provides warmth and moisture regulation across the main body. Synthetic panels protect the shoulders and upper torso, where straps, wind and repeated contact place greater demands on the garment.

This is not material purity.

It is material placement.

The Embla Hood Jacket follows a lighter and more adaptable approach. It weighs 420 grams in the men’s version and 382 grams for women. Its technical wool blend is combined with a fitted hood, elastic binding, thumb openings, two large zipped pockets and strategically reinforced areas.

The result feels closer to a contemporary active midlayer. The hood extends protection around the head, while the fitted construction maintains coverage during reaching, climbing and repeated changes of pace.

Neither jacket is particularly light.

Minimal grid fleeces and open synthetic insulation layers can weigh considerably less, dry faster and occupy less space inside a pack. Balderus and Embla make a different calculation.

Their value lies in stable comfort across changing levels of activity.

A hiking day rarely follows one consistent rhythm. A climb generates heat. A navigation stop removes it. An exposed traverse adds wind. A sheltered section changes the conditions again.

Wool can make these transitions feel less abrupt. Its fibres absorb water vapour before moisture accumulates as liquid on the surface, helping to regulate the microclimate inside the garment.

That does not make wool immune to moisture.

Once saturated, a substantial wool layer becomes heavier and normally dries more slowly than a comparable synthetic fleece. Its ability to remain warm when damp should not be confused with rapid drying.

This limitation is particularly relevant to the 575-gram Balderus.

Its dense construction offers significant warmth, but it can retain more perspiration during hard efforts. Ventilation helps, yet the jacket remains better suited to cold-weather hiking, exposed pauses and steady movement than fast ascents or trail running.

Embla moves closer to active use.

Its lighter construction, fitted hood and technical detailing make it more adaptable across variable output. Even so, modern polyester fleece still offers advantages when minimum weight, high breathability and fast drying are the priorities.

Wool offers another kind of performance.

It resists odour during repeated wear, remains comfortable across consecutive days and avoids the immediately synthetic feel of many conventional fleeces. Those qualities become more important on multi-day trips, where washing and complete drying may not be possible.

Klättermusen does not present these advantages as proof that natural fibres are universally better.

Both jackets depend on synthetic components for protection, structure and durability. Their construction recognises that wool works best when its limitations are supported rather than ignored.

That approach also separates the garments from nostalgic outdoor clothing.

The Balderus still looks and feels like wool. Its textured surface and muted colours reference traditional Nordic knitwear, while the contrasting reinforcements prevent it from becoming a historical reproduction.

The Embla takes the opposite route. From a distance, it resembles a modern technical hoodie. Its wool content becomes apparent through its thermal behaviour, surface and long-wear comfort rather than a traditional silhouette.

Together, they show two ways of returning an established material to contemporary hiking.

One makes its heritage visible.

The other places it inside a familiar performance system.

Repairability is part of the argument, but it requires context.

Wool can often be darned or patched without replacing an entire garment. Dense fleece offers a suitable foundation for visible repairs, allowing signs of use to become part of the object.

Mixed construction makes this more complicated. Boundaries between wool, nylon, elastic sections and articulated seams require greater technical skill than repairing a traditional sweater.

These garments may be repairable.

They are not mechanically simple.

Their prices create an additional expectation of longevity. The Balderus Jacket costs €300 in Europe, while the Embla Hood Jacket costs €250. Recycled Italian wool, reinforcement and complex patterning help explain the premium position, but they do not automatically guarantee value.

That value depends on how long the garments remain useful and how broadly they can be worn.

Neither model is an ultralight specialist. Neither relies on an extremely open and potentially fragile construction to achieve maximum breathability. They are designed for long hiking days, repeated use, changing weather and the practical friction of carrying a backpack.

For fast hiking, trail running or routes where the midlayer spends most of the day inside a pack, lighter synthetic options remain more convincing.
For cold hiking, travel and consecutive days of moderate movement, wool becomes easier to justify.

Klättermusen’s FW26 campaign places the collection within a multi-day mountain journey. The visual narrative is cinematic, but the clothing proposition underneath it is practical.

Longer journeys change what matters.

Odour resistance becomes relevant. Drying opportunities become limited. Temperatures and intensity fluctuate. A layer must remain comfortable while moving and tolerable when movement stops.

Wool has always worked within that rhythm.

Balderus and Embla bring it back without pretending the fibre can perform every job alone.

The €300 Balderus is the more distinctive garment: a dense 575-gram recycled-wool fleece reinforced against wind, abrasion and backpack contact. It offers substantial warmth and material presence, but its weight and drying behaviour make it better suited to cold, measured hiking than consistently fast movement.

Neither jacket makes synthetic fleece obsolete.
